KENNY URGED TO KEEP HIS SIDE OF A5 MOTORWAY DEAL AS WORK BEGINS IN SEPTEMBER

first_imgWork on the new A5 motorway from Derry to Dublin which will dramatically improve journey times for Donegal people traveling to the capital is to start in September. The project is expected to cost in the region of €450 million in a scheme being jointly funded by the North and South Governments. While today welcoming the news of a start-date, Donegal’s two Sinn Fein TDs, Padraig MacLochlainn and Pearse Doherty have insisted the Enda Kenny honour his side of the deal. “We congratulate the Six County Executive on their ongoing commitment to this project and to fair play for the people of Donegal and the North West.“Unfortunately, the Government that was elected to serve the people of Donegal, led by Enda Kenny has broken their promises.“Worse, when they recently announced a two billion euro so called stimulus package, they again left funding for the A5 out,” they saidThey added that for too long, the people of Donegal and the North West have been neglected. “We have motorways and railway lines connecting Dublin to Galway, Limerick, Cork, Waterford and Belfast. The huge gap staring everyone in the face is a motorway and direct rail line connecting Donegal, Derry and the North West to Dublin and indeed Belfast.“This injustice has to end and this Fine Gael and Labour Government failed its first test on what difference they would make compared to all the Governments in the past.“They still have a chance to do the right thing. The Six County Executive have led the way and shouldered the burden in the short term on this project.“The door is open for Enda Kenny to honour the promise he made to the people of Donegal ahead of the last election.“There is also a responsibility on all Fine Gael and Labour public representatives in Donegal to remind their leaders of these promises and fight for the people they represent”.
