17-year cicadas expected this summer across the Southeast

first_imgYes, it’s going to be a buggy, buzzy, crunchy six weeks. But if we can get through it, we won’t have to face the onslaught again for another 17 years. Virginia: Allegheny, Bland, Franklin, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke The last time Brood IX emerged from the ground was in 2003. This time around, the cicadas are expected to arrive mid-May and should clear out by late June. They typically emerge when the soil 8” beneath the ground reaches 64 degrees, especially after a warm rain. We really didn’t want to be the ones to give you this news, but this summer, just as we (hopefully!) begin to emerge from our homes after the coronavirus pandemic, there’s going to be another situation that might keep you indoors: 17-year cicadas. Cicadas live underground for years before emerging from the soil all at once, swarming trees and bushes. Their loud mating song fills the air from morning until night.  The massive cicada population is expected to arrive in the following counties: North Carolina: Ashe, Alleghany, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes Photo of cicada next to shell from Getty Images Cicadas are known to damage trees, especially young fruit trees and newly transplanted shade trees. They’re also prone to dive-bombing hikers as they innocently walk down the trails, tangling themselves in your hair while they buzz and shriek (*shudder*).  West Virginia: Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Pocahontas, Summers While smaller numbers of cicadas emerge every summer, this year, people in Virginia, West Virginia and some parts of North Carolina will see potentially hundreds of millions of the insects, as the 17-year brood hatches from the earth this spring. last_img read more

Vidic fitness boost for United

first_imgManchester United captain Nemanja Vidic declared himself fit for the new campaign after completing his first full match of pre-season in the 1-1 friendly draw with AIK Fotboll in Stockholm. “I am pleased with that and I hope that after this game I can pick up my fitness and I will be ready for the beginning of the season. “It’s frustrating when you don’t get the games. I’ve done some good training but it’s different when you’re playing a match. “I got 90 minutes (last night) and we have two more games before the start of the league season. Hopefully I can get another 90 minutes before then.” Nani and Jonny Evans limped off at the Friends Arena with groin and ankle issues, respectively, but Moyes insisted afterwards that their withdrawals were not cause for major concern. “Jonny actually got kneed on the ankle,” the Scot said. “He thought that he was going to be able to run it off. But if we left him on then it would only have got worse for him. “Nani just felt his groin tighten up and he didn’t want to take any risks. Neither did we. We thought it was safer to take him off at that time.” Moyes added: “(Nemanja) was probably the big thing for us, to get him through the full game. “Robin (Van Persie) as well – he got 90 minutes. Robin has played in some of the other games but we wanted to make sure he had 90 minutes under his belt. So a few of them did that. Press Association “It was a tough enough workout for us and they played some good stuff. If we had taken our chances then we would have won the game.” Moyes steered clear of talking too much about Wayne Rooney’s future, saying of the England striker: “He’s got a shoulder injury. I don’t think it will keep him out very long. He fell on it in the game the other day.” Asked about Rooney’s reaction to the Red Devils turning down Chelsea’s latest bid, Moyes said: “I don’t know. I’ve not asked him.” Pushed on whether he would have to convince the 27-year-old to remain at Old Trafford, the United boss replied: “You don’t need to convince anyone to play for Manchester United.” Moyes was also tight-lipped on the topic of whether a third bid would be tabled for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, saying: “I can’t say anything about it.” The Serbia defender missed the Barclays Premier League champions’ tour of the Far East and Australia due to a back complaint but featured under new boss David Moyes for the first time on Tuesday night and was delighted to come through unscathed. “I am pleased that I have 90 minutes under my belt,” Vidic told MUTV. “It’s a long time since I’ve played a full game. last_img read more

NBA approves draft lottery reform, player rest guidelines

first_imgNEW YORK — NBA owners on Thursday approved draft lottery reform and guidelines for the resting of healthy players in the regular season. The lottery reform is an attempt to disincentivize losing and curtail teams from trying to get a better chance at obtaining a top draft pick. The three highest lottery seeds will now each have a 14 percent chance of getting the top pick compared to 25 percent for the team with the worst record, 19.9 percent for the team with the second-worst record and 15.6 percent for the team with the third-worst record in the lottery system used since 2005.“Lottery reform was important because there was a perception in many of our communities that the best path to rebuilding their teams was to race to the bottom,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. “I don’t necessarily agree that that’s the optimal strategy to create a great team, but it became currency in this league. So much so that there were situations in many of our team communities where the team felt under pressure to engage in that strategy, even when they didn’t think that was the best strategy to build their team. “NBA Draft Lottery reform is a meaningful step in our continuous effort to enhance the quality of our games,” NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell said. “These changes were necessary to improve the competitive incentives for our teams.”The number of picks determined by the lottery will also increase to four from three, meaning the team with the worst record could fall to the fifth pick compared to the fourth pick in the previous lottery system. The team with the second-worst record will pick no lower than sixth, the third-seed no worse than seventh and the fourth seed no worse than eighth. The new lottery system will begin with the 2019 draft so teams can prepare and plan. While Silver and the league’s front office pushed for adopting this reform, it is not popular with all team executives, especially ones playing in small and mid-markets.Some executives in those markets believe the best way to get a franchise-altering player is through a draft and that this reform hurts their chances to draft that kind of player.Opponents also see the reform as simply moving where the tanking happens. Instead of the very worst teams trying to finish with the worst record, they envision a scenario where teams in the middle or at the end of the lottery tank to improve their chances of getting a top-3 or top-5 pick. But the league is more concerned right now about the teams trying to get the best lottery odds. In consecutive seasons, the Philadelphia 76ers “trusted the process” and lost 63, 64 and 72 games. The league wants to avoid those situations, or one such as last year when the Lakers and Phoenix Suns lost late-season games while sitting healthy players. To be fair, the Lakers won five of their final six games (at the time, angering many fans in favor of them losing as many as possible). Despite lesser odds, the Lakers (26-56) secured the No. 2 pick and Phoenix (24-58) picked fourth.By flattening lottery odds at the top, the league believes it is eliminating the idea that a team has to be the worst of the worst to improve. Supporters of the proposal reason that bad teams can still improve through the draft without “tanking,” which has been a public-relations problem for the league.“There is no longer an incentive to try to calibrate between the worst record and the second-worst record, and the second-worst record and the third-worst record,” Silver said. “But at the same time it recognizes that poor-performing teams do need to get high draft picks as a legitimate way to rebuild their team.“It’s a combination of perception, but substance too. That there was too great an incentive for teams to embark on that strategy under the current odds.”The resting regulations give Silver the ability to fine teams for sitting healthy players in instances that include nationally televised games. That legislation needed a simple majority to pass.“It ultimately is my hope that the rules go in the drawer and that teams step up here and see that there is a larger obligation to our fans, to the basketball community,” Silver said regarding the rest issue.Silver will have the discretionary ability to fine teams for resting players in several instances, including sitting multiple players outside of unusual circumstances in a single game, and healthy players in nationally televised ESPN, ABC and TNT games. When teams decide to rest players in games, they’ll be encouraged to do so for home instead of away games. Star players sitting out are expected to be on the bench during games and encouraged to be accessible to fans for interaction before the game. The league announced that any violation of the new resting rule will be deemed as conduct prejudicial or detrimental to the NBA. Teams that violate the rule will be fined at least $100,000.Silver suggested the league would continue to tweak its rest policy in the coming seasons.“The owners all understood when we were discussing them that sort of the devil is in the details here in terms of how it is we will enforce them, and we’re going to do our best,” the commissioner said. “But my hunch is that once we see them in operation, we’ll be back having additional discussions as to just the right way to calibrate it.”The NBA rid the 2017-18 season schedule of many back-to-back games around nationally televised appearances, giving teams presumably less reason to sit out players for high-profile games.“At the end of the day, it comes down to our teams,” Silver said. “It comes down to a sense of obligation our teams have toward the league that they’re a part of.” AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with Packers“ … To trade away otherwise very serviceable players and embark on a strategy that requires them to, in essence, field poor teams, which they believed would give them the best chance to improve over the long term. I felt it was corrosive to this league.”According to an ESPN report, the draft lottery reform passed with a 28-1-1 vote, with Oklahoma City voting against and Dallas abstaining. The league needed 23 of 30 teams – a three-quarters majority – to pass the legislation. The voting was part of a two-day meeting of the NBA board of governors in New York that concluded on Thursday. The chance for the No. 1 pick after the three highest lottery seeds is as follows:Team 4: 12.5%Team 5: 10.5%Team 6: 9.0%Team 7: 7.5%Team 8: 6.0%Team 9: 4.5%Team 10: 3.0%Team 11: 2.0%Team 12: 1.5%Team 13: 1.0%Team 14: 0.5%center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
