Women’s Basketball To Face UNI On Sunday

first_imgDES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women’s basketball team welcomes the UNI Panthers to the Knapp Center on Sunday afternoon in an in-state showdown between the co-leaders of the Missouri Valley Conference. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast regionally on Mediacom MC22 and on The Valley on ESPN3. Drake (12-5, 5-1 MVC) has won its last five contests after the Bulldogs used tough defense and hot shooting to cruise past Illinois State last Sunday. Drake shot 58.2 percent from the floor while holding Illinois State to just 26.8 percent shooting. The 41 points scored by the Redbirds is the lowest opponent points total allowed by the Bulldogs since Chicago State had 39 back on Dec. 2, 2012 (67-39). Junior point guard Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa), the league’s top assist leader at 6.8 per game, had eight points, eight assists and four rebounds in the Illinois State win. Ingle is now sixth all-time in Drake history with 420 career assists as she broke a tie with Kristin Santa who handed out 412 assists from 1997-2001. During the win streak, the Bulldogs are outscoring their opponents by an average of 28.0 points. Also during the streak, Drake is shooting 54.0 percent from the floor and 37.4 percent from behind the arc and outrebounding the other teams by an 18.8 rebounding margin. Even more impressive is Drake’s 116 assists on 161 field goals as four Bulldogs, led by Ingle with 37, have 10 or more assists during the winning streak. The always entertaining series with UNI (10-7, 5-1 MVC) has featured close contests in three of the previous four games with the three games being decided by a combined eight points. The two teams will face off again on Feb. 19 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Panthers are led in scoring by junior Madison Weekly at 16.1 points per game. Senior Jen Keitel is averaging 10.6 points and pulling down a team-high 7.1 rebounds a game after missing most of last season due to injury. Drake leads the all-time series over UNI, 56-21, as the series started in 1975. Drake heads to the state of Illinois next weekend for games at Bradley on Jan. 29 and at Loyola on Jan. 31.  Print Friendly Versionlast_img
